Set to open any day now is the brilliantly named Monkey Island Estate, which lies on a picturesque island in the River Thames in Bray, Berkshire. The two grade I listed heritage pavilions which form the property have been completely restored and renovated by YTL Hotels. Set across seven acres of beautifully landscaped gardens, Monkey Island Estate features 27 luxury guestrooms and three suites.

Accessed only by footbridge, boat or helicopter, the hotel is ideal for high end events where privacy is required.
Event spaces include the “stately and spacious” Ballroom, the “graceful” River Room and more intimate Boardroom.

Wales is to get its own international convention centre, opening in the grounds of Celtic Manor Resort in Newport in June 2019.

An £83.7m joint venture between Celtic Manor Resort and Welsh Government, the ICC Wales will accommodate 5,000 delegates and include a 4,000sqm pillar-free main hall, a 1,500-seated auditorium, 12 flexible meeting rooms, a double-height glass atrium and a 2,500 sqm outdoor plaza. http://www.iccwales.com/

Wow! Go Wales!!

(Dewi) #29

Sadly for us in North Wales, Manchester or Liverpool is the go to place for convention centres.

(Belinda Booker) #30

Will the new facility make a big difference to the sort of events Wales can attract, do you think?

(Dewi) #31

It will drag events away from Cardiff, Newport and even Bristol. Wales as whole wouldn’t benefit from having this venue.

(Melissa Saunders) #32

Interesting. I don’t really know the events landscape in Wales.

(Dewi) #33

Transport links play a big part in how Wales works and plays. All links run east-west, so us in north Wales see Liverpool and Manchester as the go to cities. Liverpool is known as the capital of north Wales.

(Belinda Booker) #34

That’s a shame. But it may lead to the city winning some big, international association meetings, which could have a positive economic effect?

(Dewi) #35

I believe it will have the opposite effect because the venue will be outside the cities of Cardiff and Newport and will only benefit the owner of the Celtic Manor resort.

(Belinda Booker) #36

That would be a real shame. I got another press release today, which said they’ve already confirmed The Association of Corporate Treasurers Annual Conference and the Alzheimer’s Research UK Conference - “expected to bring in around £10 million to the local economy in South Wales.” I guess time will tell…
